5 Buying Tips for a New Flagpole

If you are in the market for a new flagpole, it's important to know what you need to look for. There are several options to sift through.

1. Pole Height

There are a couple of contributing factors to consider on pole height. The first is as simple as personal preference — how tall of a pole do you desire? The other is the size of the flag you plan to display. Conventionally, a flag should be no more than a third of the size of the flagpole. A much smaller flag will look odd on a tall pole, while a larger flag is in danger of dragging on the ground.

2. Installation Style

The type of installation must also be considered. There are three main options. The first is the traditional permanent ground-mounted pole, as typically seen in front of schools. The second is a wall-mounted pole, which is often mounted near entrance ways. The final type is the stand-mounted pole. These are placed in stands that can be moved around, such as those seen on stages at events.

3. Materials

When it comes to the primary material of the pole, the options are typically between aluminium and steel. Aluminium is preferred for several reasons, with cost not being least among them. Aluminium is also rust and corrosion-resistant. Further, its light weight makes it easy to install in the ground or on a building. The lighter weight is especially useful for portable stand mounts, as well.

4. Finish Types

Finish is just as important as material, but it is more of an aesthetic preference as opposed to a functional one. If you prefer the look of the metal, then the decision is between a shiny finish or a brushed matte finish. You can also opt for ceramic coatings, which provide more protection to the metal while also giving you a choice of any flagpole colour. Some people prefer a brass finish, particularly for indoor stand-mounted poles.

5. Extras

Optional extras can increase the attractiveness and usability of the flagpole. Decorative finials can be placed atop the pole, if desired. These are available in a range of designs. Automatic systems for raising and lowering the flag are another option to consider, particularly if the use of pulleys and ropes is deemed a nuisance. Another attractive and useful extra to consider is integrated lights to provide illumination after dark.
